RARF HISTORY

The first foundation meetings were organized in January 1992. Meeting members voted to form a foundation called RANCH A RESTORATION FOUNDATION. Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws were adopted and filed in February 1992. The School of Mines had a 10-year lease with the US FWS until 1996. The Foundation then took over the care and management of the property. RARF's GRAND OPENING was held in September 1996 and we host an annual Black Tie and Blue Jean fundraiser. Small improvements like kitchen and bath upgrades including electrical and plumbing have been accomplished. The property is currently utilized for lodging and rental income to fund operations. Funds secured from state legislation restored the logs on the three main buildings. Our beloved founder, Marlene Simons, left the Board a legacy to fulfill. Come help us on that journey.

RANCH A HISTORY

In 1930 Moses Annenberg toured the Sand Creek property owned by George LaPlante. Mo was very insistent with George and was able to make a sale. Hence “Ranch A” history was in the making. Construction of Mo's vacation home began in 1932. Architect Ray Ewing hired four Finnish brothers named Juso to cut, peel, set and build the historical lodge, barn and garage/apartment. During the late 30's Annenberg was charged and convicted for tax evasion, spent time in prison and died in 1942. Former Wyoming governor Nels Smith purchased Ranch A from the family in 1942. The property changed hands four times between 1942 and 1963 when the US Fish and Wildlife Service gained title. Federal legislation deeded the property to the State of Wyoming in 1996. The Foundation has leased the property since that time.

NEEDS AND CONCERNS

Through hard work and perseverance, many of RARF's original goals have been accomplished, but a few major ones are still out of reach.

  1. WATER. Fire prevention and suppression system, upgrade the domestic facilities.
  2. EDUCATION. A long-term goal and dream is to see the fish hatchery lab and historic barn each converted to separate stand-alone centers.
  3. LODGE. Heating system, then complete restoration.
  4. TRAILS. Build and maintain self-guided system.
